Publisher Description
Maya Angelou has fascinated, moved, and inspired countless readers with the first three volumes of her autobiography, one of the most remarkable personal narratives of our age. Now, in her fourth volume, The Heart of a Woman, her turbulent life breaks wide open with joy as the singer-dancer enters the razzle-dazzle of fabulous New York City. There, at the Harlem Writers Guild, her love for writing blazes anew.
Her compassion and commitment lead her to respond to the fiery times by becoming the northern coordinator of Martin Luther King's history-making quest. A tempestuous, earthy woman, she promises her heart to one man only to have it stolen, virtually on her weding day, by a passionate African freedom fighter.
Filled with unforgettable vignettes of famous characters, from Billie Holiday to Malcolm X, The Heart of a Woman sings with Maya Angelou's eloquent prose -- her fondest dreams, deepest disappointments, and her dramatically tender relationship with her rebellious teenage son. Vulnerable, humorous, tough, Maya speaks with an intimate awareness of the heart within all of us.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Maya Angelou is one of America’s greatest treasures. The late poet laureate and activist’s fourth memoir chronicles her transition from entertainer to activist to author during the ‘60s. As an active participant in the fight for civil rights, Angelou came into contact with the likes of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, but she was always the star of her own life. Beyond the stories about her famous friends, globetrotting adventures, and whirlwind romances, The Heart of a Woman is a moving tale about a Black woman trying to do right by herself, her son, and her people. A true trailblazer, Angelou was blessed with a self-deprecating wit and a seemingly endless capacity for warmth. Reading about her life experiences made us love and respect her even more than we already did.

Great book
Really enjoyed reading this book even though it took me awhile to finish. I wanted to know what happened next. Maya Angelou takes you on a journey through her stories. It allowed you to see things through her eyes and so descriptive that you felt as if you were there along for the ride. I can't wait to get more books written by her.
