Publisher Description
The classic first-contact science fiction novel that launched the career of Jack McDevitt, the national bestselling author of Coming Home—now revised from the original edition, and featuring a new foreword.
From a remote corner of the galaxy a message is being sent. The continuous beats of a pulsar have become odd, irregular…artificial. It can only be a code.
Frantically, a research team struggles to decipher the alien communication. And what the scientists discover is destined to shake the foundations of empires around this world—from Wall Street to the Vatican…

Compelling concepts…slow book
I’m a huge McDevitt fan. And I get what he was going for here - to me it’s a discussion as much as a plot…”what would we do in this situation?”. But I actually skimmed pages in this one….it’s a bit indulgent, heading off into occasional dull tangents, and giving us a sort of open, deflated ending. Feels like he might have written himself into a corner of sorts. I loved much of the early description & dialogue between the researchers, politicians, etc, but when more and more little revelations happen, he takes the easy way out. Ultimately, if you’re a fan, read it. If you’re new to McDevitt, go to another book first.
