Although this book had an ok plot, it ruined the entire Percy Jackson series for me. Riordan put many things and issues into the book that really didn't need to be in it. He really tried to reach out to the homosexual community by having the team come across gay gods and even have one of the main demigods admit he was a homosexual. Half of the book was annabeth and Percy walking in the dark, afraid in Tartarus. Then Riordan makes references to the demigod files so if you have not read those books you will be literally in the dark for half of the book. Because of the many things he put in this book regarding the characteristics of each of the characters, I cannot read any of the Percy Jackson books again without the disappointment this book has caused. I would not recommend this book to anyone, but especially those under 13 because of the many controversial and political issues that were put into this book. Thanks for ruining the series Riordan.
ok why do so many people have everything against gays? "im reading this book to my nine year old and i dont want to explain adult themes"? so heterosexual relationships are fine but once its gay its not? "i was starting to like nico but then sadly, hes gay"? really? im sorry but i really enjoyed this book. i appreciate the inclusion of the lgbtq+ community, as this is the first young adult novel that isnt all "white heterosexual people throughout the whole book!!! yay!!" kind of thing. this series broke a lot of barriers in young adult literature, and im glad, because guess what? not everyone is a straight white cisgender male, so there should be books about multicultural, strong, transgender, queer females. the fact that people dont like the book just because of "adult themes" is really insulting to me. even in the origional percy jackson series percy and annebeth were mackin on eachothers lips like it wasnt even a thing, so why is it so inappropriate for two guys to be doing the same thing? answer: its not. if thats an "adult theme" then you better not show your daughter any disney movies! basically all they are about is that finding a man being the most important thing in the world! and the lgbtq+ community isnt a "political issue" its a group of people that should have just as many rights and just as much acceptance as anyone else. so how about you guys act like adults and actually enjoy the book, instead of being told off by a 14 year old.
Nicko gay. Lame plot twist and unnecessary. Too many love triangles as it is.
Gods are witless. It's never ending trickery at its worst. Demigods ALMOST always get out of a tight spot using some stupid ploy that tricks an ancient god or goddess.
I don't remember the Percy Jackson series being so childish. Harry Potter evolved into an adult quickly because of the adult things happening around him. The story grew along with the characters and readers. The fart jokes are just getting old.
This series seems to be stuck in the mud. I want some characters to die. Some real, clever plot twists. Every scenario consists of, "there is a one in a billion chance this will get us out of this mess." And every time it works and they are fine. This leads to a very boring read
Despite all this, there are rays of light and some occasional humor, but for the most part I give it a meh rating.
I know. You'll read it anyway. I did, too.
But this is by far the weakest book in any riordan series. It's weak on plot and the premise, once so clever, is worn thin.
And, the big reveal about nico is ridiculous and contrived. Disney at its best.
It's unfortunate. Here's hoping the last book will be better...and that the author will then stop.
Not terrible, but pretty much the same as other books. Could have done without the gay agenda. It's a children's book, really. The only new thing the author could come up with was a gay Nico? But, on a whole the story will entertain.
