APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Told across dual timelines a quarter-century apart, The Hiking Trip is a twisty thriller that centres on overtaxed English mum Laura as well as a 1990s-era tragedy on Canada’s picturesque West Coast Trail. As the novel gradually reveals more about what happened in the older timeline, Laura becomes increasingly fixated on the discovery of decades-old human remains on that trail and how it could threaten her family. Author Jenny Blackhurst keeps us guessing across clever cliffhangers and sneaky red herrings, while Laura is the kind of quippy narrator who knows very well that she’s in over her head. As the two plots progress and intersect, there are plenty of shocks in store for readers—including the truth of just who actually survived that fateful hike and who didn’t.
