Considered one of the best and most influential literary works ever published, The History of Don Quixote De La Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, is a Spanish novel translated into more languages than any book other than the Bible. Published in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615, it is a major influence on the literary community as evidenced by direct references in Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers (1844) and Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884).
The History of Don Quixote De La Mancha follows Alonso Quixano, a middle-aged man from the region of La Mancha in central Spain, who is obsessed with reading books lauded in chivalry. Losing his sanity, he imitates the hero of these books and renames himself Don Quixote. Together with his old horse, Rocinante, he dons his armor, lance, and sword, and sets out to destroy the wicked, undo wrongs, and bring justice to the world.
Along the way he designates a peasant woman, Aldonza Lorenzo as his ladylove and renames her Dulcinea del Toboso. He enlists Sancho Panza - a simple farmer - as his faithful squire, with promises to make Sancho the wealthy governor of an isle.
