Meet Edward Wright: A young bachelor who leads a solitary life in London and works for Jeffery’s and Co, an American trading company.

When his only close friend, Colin Berker, manage to coax him into attending
‘Mr Chang’s extraordinary illusions and magic show’ at the Egyptian Hall, Edward is more than a little bit sceptical.

Because‒as every enlightened gentleman in the modern world and the 19th century knows‒magic is only unscientific nonsense and does not exist, according to Edward. At least, that is his solid and unwavering conviction, before the red, velvet curtains were drawn apart and the magical show began.

An extract from the story:
I backed away from him until I hit the small table with the jars and powder pots.
I was cornered, and there was no other place for me to go!
“You wanted to come here,” the assistant said and smiled again, clearly satisfied that he had trapped me.
He leaned closer. I felt his hot breath against my neck as he whispered, “And you desire me…”
I was about to deny his words frantically when feather-light fingertips trailed the side of my cheek, down my silk cravat,
following the stiff material of the brocaded waistcoat, and then, slyly further down until he reached the hem of my breeches.
I gasped, reacting instantly and almost uncontrollably to his touch.
My eyes met his charcoal black, tilted eyes, and my final excuses and denials died on my lips.
And instead of pushing him away from me as I should have, I sinfully pulled him closer and kissed him.
