Publisher Description
A Killer Without A Conscience
The crimes are barbaric. The victims are found in desolate rural areas, naked and impaled on long wooden stakes. There are no clues. No DNA evidence. Just a message, etched over and over again on one broken body: "I have returned."
Without Control
FBI Agent Sam Markham's last investigation ended with a serial killer's death and Sam's promotion. But back then, Sam had luck on his side. This time, the murderer's methods are evolving too fast, his bloodlust growing too swiftly. This time, no one is safe.
Without Limits
With each mutilated body, new depths to The Impaler's brutality are revealed. And as the clues finally slip into place, Sam will discover how easy it is to cross the line from hunter--to hunted. . .

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In Funaro's uninspired second thriller, the prequel to The Sculptor, FBI special agent Sam Markham, newly relocated to North Carolina, is tormented by the death of his wife at the hands of a murderer whose execution is imminent and whose attempts to apologize only disgust him. While dealing with nightmares from that trauma, Markham must also apprehend "Vlad the Impaler," a psychopath who impales each of his victims on a stake. The three victims a gang member, a solid student, and a criminal defense attorney appear to have nothing in common. Markham comes to believe that the positioning of the corpses may be the result of the Impaler's desire to replicate the Ottoman symbol for Islam. A long stretch explaining the origins of Vlad's evil brings the action to a screeching halt. Thomas Harris fans who expect a profiler and his quarry to be fully developed characters will be disappointed.
Customer Reviews
Great read!
Fast paced, thriller
Great ride but...
Great book by an author that knows how to keep the storyline moving and tense. To all who are considering this book; the errant one-star review here (by Beachbooks) should truly be ignored; if you appreciate Grisham, Reichs, Boyd Morrison, then by all means move forward. The book may not have been to his/her liking but that is a matter of personal taste, not bad writing. My only disappointment is that the first book in the series is not available here on iBooks; The Sculptor. If I would have previously known that, I would have certainly purchased both (as they are available) on the Kindle rather than iBooks. Great three-hour read… even on the beach.
The Impaler
Downloaded the sample of this book first because I wasn't sure I would like it,but boy oh boy, did I ever! It had my attention from the start and never let go. Hated to see it end, the main character, the Impaler starts off as an unimaginable evil being but once his backstory begins, I found myself feeling sorry for him and sadly enough hoping for his redemption. Wow, I didn't think that would be how I felt about this character at all at this start of the book. I highly recommend this book!
