Publisher Description

The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was a rebellion in India against the rule of the British East India Company, that ran from May 1857 to July 1859. The rebellion began as a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, in the cantonment of the town of Meerut, and soon escalated into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, western Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to East India Company power in that region, and was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion has been known by many names, including the Indian Mutiny, India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857, the Rebellion of 1857, the Uprising of 1857, the Sepoy Rebellion, the Indian Insurrection, and the Sepoy Mutiny.

A snapshot of history and biases

The book is a condensed version of a longer and more detailed history but is still a rather tedious read especially for someone not well versed with the geography it refers to. But it details a lot of the campaigns so if that is of interest to you, you are in luck. It is also a great insight into the mind of the author and the audience he was writing for. They were all English and by today’s standards rather racist. The book also spends little time on examining the causes of the mutiny and the grievances of the mutineers. Many are not even named whereas on the English side ordinary officers, engineers and soldiers are named often. Only one Indian rebel earns any praise - the Rani of Jhansi, but then again the author fails to mention her name! Yes it’s also a rather hard read if you are Indian.

The last chapter is a good read because it’s largely opinions. Most are wrong, especially the predictions.

But ultimately this is not a modern book but a historical document. From that perspective this is a good copy. It’s missing maps (if there were any in the original) and the line spacing on the text could have been increased. Still an overall good effort to put this on iBooks.
