Liam O’Flaherty was born on the 28th August 28, 1896, in Gort na gCapall on Inishmore, Aran Islands), County Galway, Ireland.

He grew up in an Irish-speaking community, which would deeply influence his lyrical writing style.

After serving in World War I, he travelled the world as a sailor before fully dedicating himself to literature.

O'Flaherty became a leading figure of the Irish Literary Renaissance. He co-founded the Communist Party of Ireland, and his fiction often explores strong political and psychological themes. His writing is celebrated for its raw realism and vivid nature descriptions.

Liam O'Flaherty died on the 7th September 1984 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. He was 88.
