Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why—or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.
To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch—and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.
**The games continue in The Hawthorne Legacy, The Final Gambit, and The Brothers Hawthorne!
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
In Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ beguiling mystery, Avery Grambs suddenly becomes America’s richest teenager when she inherits a Texas billionaire’s entire fortune. But there’s a catch: The bewildered heiress must live in the magnate’s epic Hawthorne House for one year—and it’s no small feat to stay in the home of a master manipulator with a mysterious agenda and his own game to play. Full of captivating clues and genius red herrings, The Inheritance Games pulls us into a mansion riddled with secret passages and hidden traps. Barnes keeps us guessing alongside the quick-witted Avery, who must also contend with Hawthorne’s angry descendants, who are hiding a big secret and scheming to put her life in danger. If you enjoyed watching Knives Out, strap in for a deliciously paranoid thriller.
When high school junior Avery Grambs learns that the violent, domineering boyfriend of Libby, her half-sister and legal guardian, will be sharing their apartment, she moves into her car. Then Avery is summoned to attend the will reading of billionaire and complete stranger Tobias Hawthorne. Avery and Libby travel from Connecticut to Texas, where they are stunned to learn that Tobias left the bulk of his estate to Avery. To inherit, she must spend a year living in Tobias's labyrinthine mansion with his two furious daughters, who think she is a con-woman, and his four brilliant, hypercompetitive grandsons Nash, 25; Grayson, 19; Jameson, 18; and Xander, 16 who believe she is their puzzle-obsessed grandfather's final riddle. As Avery gets swept up in the boys' quest for answers, she starts to feel like she belongs until someone on the grounds tries to kill her. Tony trappings and a boldly drawn, predominantly white cast complement the delightfully soapy plot of this strong, Knives Out esque series opener from Barnes (Little White Lies). The denouement underwhelms, but an abundance of cryptic clues and tempestuous love triangles provides ample enjoyment. Ages 12 up.
The inheritance games
One of the best books I have read
Overall this was a good read and i was invested . The only critic is i feel like its a bit slow at times, and there were boring bits. I love the hawthorn’s dynamics and characters, I would recommend.
Love ! Team Grayson
