Publisher Description
The Duke of Chatfield is touring Italy with his daughter Monica, son Eustace, and family lawyer Sir Stephen. An automobile failure forces them to stop in the small village of Pellini, where, 20 years earlier, the Duke's late elder brother had a mistress and illegitimate child. In the evening, Monica meets the young man, Francis, and tries to convince him not to join the local monastery. She fails.
Some years later, the family lawyer discovers that Francis is in fact the legitimate Duke, and encourages him to return to England, displacing the family who have held that position for many years. How Francis treats his relations, and his new found wealth and position form the plot of this 1927 novel.
