Edward Carnegie, a soldier in the Special Forces, has been seriously wounded and after languishing in hospital for many months, rents a cottage in the Lake District. With Christmas fast approaching, his only wish is to recover his physical and mental wellbeing, while at the same time keeping himself to himself and his background secret.

A snowstorm imposes upon Edward a striking young woman who introduces herself as Fiona Wilde, but fails to mention she is the Lady heiress to the surrounding Hartshead Estate or that she is to become engaged to nouveau riche millionaire Nigel Harrison on New Year’s Eve.
