Publisher Description
Katherine Shaw—Kate— is happy with her life. She has supportive friends, a glamorous magazine career, and a love of all things Jane Austen. But when she loses her job, her beloved grandmother falls ill and a financial disaster forces a sale on the family home, Kate finds herself facing a crisis that would test even the most stalwart of Austen heroines.
Friends rally round, connecting her to freelance gigs, and presenting her with a birthday gift— title to land in Scotland—that's about to come in very handy. Turns out that Kate's first freelance assignment is to test an Austen-inspired theory: in the toughest economic times is a wealthy man the only must-have accessory? What begins as an article turns into an opportunity as Kate—now Lady Kate—jet-sets to Palm Beach, St Moritz and London where, in keeping company with the elite, she meets prospects who make Mr. Darcy look like an amateur. But will rubbing shoulders with men of good fortune ever actually lead her to love? And will Kate be able to choose between Mr. Rich and Mr. Right?
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
A "self-professed Jane Austen addict" tries her hand at gold-digging, with disastrous and hilarious results, in Izzo's charming first novel. Though broke, single, and approaching 40, Katharine Shaw usually manages to make the best of things. She has supportive pals and she's passionate about her career in the magazine industry. But losing her job and the family home makes it hard for even Kate to stay positive. When given a freelance assignment to see if a modern woman can use Austen's tactics to land a moneyed man, Kate realizes this may be her chance to solve her financial woes. With freshly cashed-out investments and a dubious Scottish title given to her as a gag gift, "Lady Kate" finagles her way into high society. Traipsing around the world, she connects with a few wealthy bachelors, but a handsome, charming bed-and-breakfast owner has her reconsidering her quest for a rich beau. Izzo isn't trailblazing, and the Austen connection is tenuous, but Kate's search for love contains a surfeit of laugh-out-loud moments. Spectacular descriptions of lavish, character-filled parties add further froth to the escapist fantasy.
Customer Reviews
Super cute!
Mix one part chick lit, add in one part of everything you love about Jane auten- including the appropriate quotes- a large dash of romance and you have the perfect recipe for summer beach reading! I'm telling all my friends- fun to read, didn't want to put it down until I came ( too soon) to the predictable but, worthy ending.
Nicely done
I really enjoyed this. Well written. Funny. Laugh out loud funny. A bit predictable yes but very fun.
Incredibly predictable
I was not a fan of this book due to the incredibly predictable and boring nature of it. The author tries to use foreshadowing to keep you guessing, but it is entirely clear what is about to happen. The story line is boring and the main character is definitely not one you fall in love with. Instead you just want to keep telling her how stupid she is!
