His college education and apparent ambition seemed like husband material in my eyes, so when he proposed, I accepted, unwittingly sealing my fate. Little did I know that Richard battled demons of his own, and he soon succumbed to the grips of alcoholism. By the time the truth emerged, we had already uprooted our lives to further his career by moving halfway across the country, leaving my support system behind.
