The Jungle Books collect some of the most beloved children’s stories ever written, since they were first published in magazines starting in 1893. The stories feature Mowgli, a foundling raised in the Seeonee hills of India by a pack of wolves, a wise black panther named Bagheera, and a gruff but lovable bear called Baloo. The books also include the beloved tale of the mongoose “Rikki-tikki-tavi,” “The White Seal,” and many more. These stories helped confirm Rudyard Kipling as one of the greatest children’s authors of any era, as well as one of the greatest writers and poets in the English language.
Adapted by Powell from Kipling's The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book, this interactive entry in the Seek and Find Classics series invites readers to take part in the unfolding story. In more than a dozen seek-and-find scenes keyed to significant moments in the plot, children are asked to find 10 objects and animals (and Mowgli, of course) in Frenna's cinematic cartoons. The retro vibe of her artwork at times recalls the Disney adaptation but still offers a distinctive spin on the characters and drama of the tales. Also available: Alice in Wonderland. Ages 8 up.
This is the edition to buy!
After seeing the beautiful new Disney movie, The Jungle Book, I was inspired to read the original Kipling stories, whereupon I realized that he wrote two Jungle Books. I searched on "The Jungle Books" and found this wonderful, illustrated edition that contains the complete text of both books. Kipling is indeed a wonderful writer and storyteller, and the Mowgli stories are as rewarding for adults as for children, and in fact probably more so for adults as they will better appreciate the social commentary embedded in the stories. And I was startled and gratified by the incredible drawings and color paintings included in this edition, which truly makes this just about the best deal anywhere for 99 cents.
