This book is fantastic.
The character development is superb. The plot is complex but gets wrapped up beautifully in the end. There is a lot of research that went into the book regarding pilgrimages in medieval England, as most of the story occurs on a pilgrimage to a certain shrine. Also there is lots of information about how the Bible was copied by hand in Latin at priories. The heroine is a copyist at a priory who reads and writes English and Latin. Since she has read the Bible in its entirety there are references to The Song of Solomon which is perhaps the most romantic event book of the Bible, fitting for a romance novel. The conclusion occurs when the pilgrims reach the shrine and it is very clever how the story gets resolved.
