Publisher Description

Harry Kirkland was a star shortstop in a small Western-Pennsylvania steel town where baseball was everything.

Everyone in his home town eagerly followed this Little League hero’s career. Their adulation and loyalty convinced him that his life would continue on a golden road of success and good fortune. But Harry never fulfilled his dreams. Stricken with a bout of viral encephalitis and sent to live in a mental institution, he slowly faded away—brain-damaged, toothless, and void of hope.

Until the day that Ted Tresh, Harry’s childhood friend, arrived at the hospital for a long-overdue visit. Armed with recollections of a simpler life, championship games, and lazy summer days, Ted takes Harry back to revisit their past, and reconnect with the boys they once were.

"The Last Perfect Summer" is a nostalgic trip back to the 1960s—back to the days when a soda cost a dime and Mickey Mantle was every schoolboy’s idol. Back to a time when the innocence of youth allowed for any dream to come true.

The Ladt Perfect Summer

Excellent - Excellent. The author, Ed Prence, writes so smoothly, effectively and makes the reader feel they are there in that sweet town enjoying the 1960's with its ambience--being loyal to their neighbors, their merchants, and their town. What great pride they had in their community. This book was a joy to read, and I will look forward to rereading it during the hot days of Summer when the breeze drifting past smells of fresh cut grass and our youth.

For Anyone Who's Ever Been a Kid.

The Last Perfect Summer, reflects upon an age of innocence, when the nation was changing and baseball was king. It takes us to that special time in our lives, just before life began to get complicated. When the only thing we were concerned about were friendships, family, and fun. When games of release were simulations of heroic battles and every pick-up baseball game was practice for the ninth inning of the World Series.

Though these things seem trivial nowadays, Prence is able to help us realize how crucial our childhood is to making us the people we are today and showing us the power of true, lasting friendship.
