From the New York Times-bestselling author of Exit West, a story of love, loss, and rediscovery in a time of unsettling change.
One morning, a man wakes up to find himself transformed. Overnight, Anders’s skin has turned dark, and the reflection in the mirror seems a stranger to him. At first he shares his secret only with Oona, an old friend turned new lover. Soon, reports of similar events begin to surface. Across the land, people are awakening in new incarnations, uncertain how their neighbors, friends, and family will greet them. Some see the transformations as the long-dreaded overturning of the established order that must be resisted to a bitter end. In many, like Anders’s father and Oona’s mother, a sense of profound loss and unease wars with profound love. As the bond between Anders and Oona deepens, change takes on a different shading: a chance at a kind of rebirth--an opportunity to see ourselves, face to face, anew.
In Mohsin Hamid’s “lyrical and urgent” prose (O Magazine), The Last White Man powerfully uplifts our capacity for empathy and the transcendence over bigotry, fear, and anger it can achieve.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
With Exit West, Mohsin Hamid put a magical-realism spin on the migrant crisis. With this engrossing speculative novel, he uses a sprinkling of science fiction to look at race in a whole new way. When physical trainer Anders wakes up one morning, his white skin has inexplicably turned brown. As Anders’ family, friends, and colleagues react to his transformation, he’s forced to navigate love, loss, and bigotry. And Hamid imagines what would happen if more and more white people underwent the same experience as Anders, setting off a tide of fear and hatred. The Last White Man is a clever and poignant tale that dares us to look at prejudice in a new light.
Customer Reviews
Evil
This is satan’s way of putting you in eternal damnation, using hatred against people of another color. It is a pity to serve satan when you have an opportunity to serve god almighty the creator of heaven and earth. This will be the downfall of your soul. This book is of a evil spirit, and doctrines of devils, and whoever follow it will find themselves in an unending nightmare in the fire. This book is a ball of destructive hate, which will lead one straight to eternal damnation.
Racist
Can’t believe this is even remotely acceptable to be recommended. Imagine the inverse being written. Why are we celebrating divisiveness?
