The prequel to Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher saga introduces us to Geralt of Rivia, a sorcerer who’s also a bounty hunter of mythical creatures. The Last Wish starts with a bang, launching us into Geralt’s colorful adventures and surfacing scene-stealing characters like the man-turned-monster who doesn’t want to be changed back because women find him more attractive this way. Sapkowski really knows how to keep readers on the edge: He opens one tale with a knife to Geralt’s throat and cuts another story short right before a character makes a major announcement. It’s no wonder that his dramatic, immersive fantasy world has inspired video games, graphic novels, and now a TV show.

A world in gray
A unique and thoroughly enjoyable read from beginning to end. Presents many interesting and fresh takes on fantasy cliches and human nature. The short stories are well written (and translated )for the most part, but occasionally the dialogue and action are hard to follow. Modern words, swears, and phrases are often used which can be immersion breaking for some. All and all an excellent introduction to a very different series.
Hidden gem, must read
This book is what I call a rarity. It is not often that I find a book that I read entirely in one single night, and it is a longer book. The book itself inspired an entire video-game series, so needless to say it is one of the best I've read in some time. If you're into ancient mythical times, then look no further.
The plot is fairly complex with both books from this author should you be interested in a second helping, though the read itself is fairly ways to follow. I will be surprised if this book does not create a movie, though casting the right person to play Geralt of rivia should prove to be impossible.
My best opinion for you if you are on the 'I don't know' phase is to grab the sample and just read. I was captivated for the majority of that alone.

Not what was expected
While this “beginner Witcher book” was a fun read, I found myself a bit let down by the constant poke and pillage of well-known fairy tales. Being a novice to the Witcher series, I simply did not expect that. Will I continue reading the series? Perhaps. Perhaps not. I’ll give it some thought and maybe someone will read this review and convince me to do so.
