Alexander Wheelock Thayer (22 October 1817 in South Natick, Massachusetts, U.S. – 15 July 1897 in Trieste, Italy) was an American writer and journalist and autor of the first scholarly biography of Ludwig van Beethoven, still after many updatings regarded as a standard work of reference on the composer. He worked in the library of the School of Law at Harvard University. Fascinated by the works of Beethoven, Thayer was extremely dissatisfied published in 1840, the first comprehensive biography of Beethoven, written by Anton Schindler, and in 1849 went to Europe to study the German language and to establish the truth.
