The Longest Yard. Dir. Peter Segal. With Adam Sandle, Chris Rock, Nelly, and Burt Reynolds. Paramount, 27 May 2005. DVD release: 20 September 2005. 109 minutes. Rated PG-13. It would not be unusual to accuse Hollywood of appealing to the lowest common denominator, to pay little attention to character or plot development, or to minimize production costs to maximize profits. Although by no means characteristic of all major motion picture releases, these tendencies do describe a large number of them, particularly the summer blockbusters, teen comedies, and endless sequels. More and more, it would seem, this list should also include the re-make. In 2005 alone, filmmakers have resurrected old television series like Bewitched, The Honeymooners, and The Dukes of Hazzard and brought them to the big screen. Reproductions of former feature-length films include The Amityville Horror, The Bad News Bears, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Herbie: Fully Loaded, and The Longest Yard. As filmgoers, we are likely to ask, "Why remake that movie?" But it is as critics and scholars that we should ask, "What does this remake tell us about ourselves?"
