One of Book Riot's "9 Not-To-Be-Missed Romances Hitting the Shelves this Summer"
Can a woman who’s down on her luck find love with a dashing Duke-to-be? Find out in The Luck of the Bride, the next Regency romance in the Cavensham Heiresses series from Janna MacGregor.
She's leaving nothing up to chance. Not even love…
March Lawson is an orphan who, for the past eight years, has struggled to raise her siblings on a meager allowance. Most women March's age would be picking out ball gowns for the upcoming season. But March's focus is not on finding a husband. First, she must devote her energies to just one man: the coldhearted skinflint who refuses to release her inheritance.
Michael Cavensham, the Marquess of McCalpin, is not a heartless man. When he learns that Miss Lawson has been forging his name to procure funds, he can't bring himself to have her arrested—not when the bold-faced embezzler is so enchantingly beautiful. Instead, McCalpin agrees to visit her home to assess the situation more closely. March has no choice but to accept. But how can she manage the handsome trustee who controls her purse strings—when he tugs at her heart strings as well?
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
The strong third Cavensham Heiresses Regency features likable characters, but the promising story is overwhelmed by purple prose ("the words gutted him as no knife could") and culminates in a lazy, too-easy conclusion. Plucky March Lawson shows resourcefulness and determination as she raises her three siblings after their parents' untimely deaths. Since the family trustees never responded to her pleas for help, March forged the most recent trustee's signature in order to funnel her inheritance to an account she could access. When Michael, the young, likable Marquess of McCalpin, is notified of her crime, he brings the Lawson family to his home while investigating their circumstances. He hopes to acquit the lovely March, but new evidence of embezzlement comes to light, and the spreadsheet threatens to reveal his shameful difficulty with numbers. Will the burgeoning scandal cancel their growing romance, or can they learn to trust each other despite evidence that doesn't add up? Unfortunately, all the tension fizzles out well before the end of the book. While sexy and entertaining, this one will likely leave MacGregor's fans disappointed.
Customer Reviews
Enchanting!!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
What a delightful story! Once I started, I couldn't put it down. I loved the dual POV that the book was written in. It was charming to see the male protagonist having some issues and not the perfect alpha male. It really made for a more humanizing character. I could have fallen for McCalpin myself!!!! As for March, oh my word. That poor girl. She just had such a hard life and it seemed like everything that could go wrong did for her. Yes, Ms. MacGregor really out did herself. The plot was such that you can't put the book down because there was so much going on that one has to keep reading. This is the first book in the series that I have read. Now I have to go back and read the prior stories. The characters from other books make many appearances here and I am so interested in reading their stories now.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great historical romance that is FULL of action!!!!
An OK read
The Luck of the Bride is the third book in the series, however, it can be read as a standalone.
What I liked:
The first 50% of the book.
Bennett - my favorite character was the 9yr old brother of the heroine. He’s funny and charming. I imagine him walking around in shoes too large for him as he begins to grow into the man he will become. I hope if Janna continues the series, she gives us a story about Bennet and does him justice. He was by far my favorite character.
March - wow. She was thrown into raising her siblings when she wasn’t much more than a child herself. Her resourcefulness and dedication to her family and land is admirable.
What I didn’t like:
The last 50% of the book. The drama with her cousin was a bit much and then Michael not standing by her just because he didn’t bother to read a book or speak about his challenges with numbers took it over the top.
The flow of the story. I felt like we would start to get into the characters heads or get into a scene and then suddenly the chapter ended and it was the next day. It became jarring for me.
Overall, it was an ok read for me.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Griffin and NetGalley for providing the arc. This in no way affects my review of this book
An Amazing Story
Sigh.. Be still my heart!! This story just wrapped around my heart and once I started I could not put it down. Janna MacGregor's well drawn characters came to life with her descriptive prose and I could actually see them in my mind. The hero Michael Caversham, heir to the Duke of Langham has a secret and has been hiding it since he was a child. He has been fortunate that his brother has stood by his side and helped him through the years. March Lawson has a secret of her own. Her family has been living hand to mouth since her parents passed away and she was left in charge of her three siblings years ago. Although there was money left in trusts, she has not been able to access the funds. She finally catches the attention of Michael as he has become her guardian and she has been breaking the law to protect her siblings. As he summons her to his home and the two meet.. Well all I can say if there are so many wonderful emotions in this story. March has only looked after her siblings for years and never thought of herself. Michael had no idea of her existence until recently. Then there is the evil cousin who hopes to gain it all. I could go on and on about this story because I loved it so much. But I do not want to give it all away and I know you will feel the same!! This is the first story in this series I have read and it can be read as a standalone. But trust me, I intend to go back and read everything this author has written. It was that amazing. Yes, yes it was...
