by Susan Bowers

Charrie and Geoffrey have been married a few months. She and her Uncle Jerry are living in Serennia but are from our world. As such they possess magical powers. Geoffrey is a native, he is the Royal Magistrate and hears cases. They live in a manor given to them by theKing. Charrie often accompanies Geoffrey. She and Jerry also use their powers to make life easier for everyone around them in this Medieval type world. Jerry lives at the royal castle. He is King Donatho's Expert on 'Outsiders'. He studies Serennian history, when complete he will compare it to our own. Jerry loves kids and has become a mentor to six year old Prince Donacet; his magic helps to cement their friendship. His schemes with the boy are often observed from a window by Cylene, Queen Theresa's chief lady-in waiting. She's intrigued bythe kind, handsome bachelor. Shortly they are married. Charrie uses her powers to help peoplein dire straits. Jerry uses his to aid King Donatho and Queen Theresa and in working with Donacet. Presently Charrie gives birth to Yanna, a little girl. The royal couple have also recently had Donnelle, another girl. As they grow the two become very close. Geoffrey is delighted with his daughter, spends all his affection on her to the detriment of his wife to whom he has become indifferent. Charrie naturally become miserable in the marriage. Once Yanna was grown and married, things progressively deteriorate. Geoffrey's adjudicating keeps him away longer and longer: Yet Charrie refuses to investigate his actions magically. One day he returns with a young woman, later another, who he calls his 'secretaries,' but it is obvious they are his concubines. Eventually Charrie finds she has no more affection for her husband. She leaves a note renouncing their marriage, goes to visit Yanna one more time and takes herself back to her own world. Yanna and her husband go to visit Geoffrey. At first he is belligerent at her insistence of his getting rid of his 'assistants,' but once Yanna tells him of Charrie's leaving, all his defiance melts away. Yanna leaves a much sadder father when she and Frenton return home. Charrie reappears in her bedroom. She takes a look around and burst into tears, releasing years of frustration. Shortly there was a familiar consoling arm around her - Uncle Jerry has also returned. They trade stories. Cylene died when she fell down the stairs. Next Uncle Jerry explains that he isn't really her uncle. Her grandparent's first child, Charrie's father, had been adopted. He was much older than Jerry; nevertheless the two had grown up very close. Jerry loved his brother's new baby and helped care for Charrie since she was an infant. After that it wasn't long before they realized how much they loved one another.
