Tevan, the vassal of Nuvor and betrothed to Ainlin, is about to move up in the world. From a lowly farmer’s son, he becomes Nuvor’s heir by adoption, and, by studying The Book of Oaths, learns by questioning that things may not be quite as they seem. And therein lies the rub.
For as long as anyone can remember you gave up something to get status- it was a given and literally weighed heavily on a landowner, a magistrate or the Ruler. Tevan And Ainlin begin to question and in doing so change understanding..
This is yet another book in Sorensen’s “Rulership” series, but can be read as a stand alone. It’s a Young Adult read that will stir conversations into dealing with things differently. Is it safe just because we’ve always done it one way over another? And what is the outcome in bargaining? Highly readable and recommended. 4/5
