Publisher Description
Centered on a real landmark on the coast of North Carolina, The Mailbox blends intriguing folklore and true faith with raw contemporary issues that affect every woman. When Lindsey Adams first visits the Kindred Spirit mailbox at Sunset Beach, she has no idea that twenty years later she will still be visiting the mailbox—still pouring out her heart in letters that summarize the best and worst parts of her life. Returning to Sunset for her first vacation since her husband left her, Lindsey struggles to put her sorrow into words. Memories surface of her first love, Campbell—and the rejection that followed. When Campbell reappears in her life, Lindsey must decide whether to trust in love again or guard herself from greater pain. The Mailbox is a rich novel about loss, hope, and the beauty of second chances.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Nonfiction author Whalen pens her first novel, centered on an actual landmark mailbox in Sunset Beach, N.C. Over a span of some 20 years, Lindsey Adams makes summer visits to the Kindred Spirit mailbox and deposits an annual written update on her life. When her husband divorces her, Lindsey makes the trek again and meets up with long-lost love, Campbell Forrester, whose own marriage dissolved years earlier. Unsure they can rekindle their youthful love, both Lindsey and Campbell struggle to make the leap from teenage infatuation to a lasting adult commitment. Whalen's use of a mailbox as the tie between people, memories, and romantic love is intriguing, and she makes it work more effectively than a reader might expect.

Amazing!
As a kid my family and I would go to Sunset Beach every year and I know every inch of that little island by heart. Last summer I sat on the beach reading this book and while reading it I could picture the characters walking on the same beach I was sitting on at that very moment. I could hear the same waves crushing into the sand as they came ashore. It was one of the best books I've ever read! Just knowing the setting in real life helped me grasp the story as it played out in my mind... So if you ever take a trip to my favorite little summer getaway island read or reread this book as you sit on the beach! It will blow your mind how much being in the actual setting of the book will allow the story to form in your imagination! YOU DID A FABULOUS JOB WITH THIS BOOK MARYBETH WHALEN! I DONT THINK YOU COULD HAVE MADE IT ANY BETTER!!
