Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was a French writer  and poet mostly known for his epic novel 'Notre-Dame de Paris'. Victor Hugo is considered the founding father of the French romanticism. Hugo also made a successful attempt of becoming an artrist as well, his legacy in that field counts up to more than 4000 drawings. 


'The Man Who Laughs' is a novel by Victor Hugo initially published in 1869. Critics consider that the novel belongs to the realistic genre with some elements of romanticism. The central figure of the story is a man who calls himself Ursus (which means a bear). The man is a misanthrope, he hates people around him and thinks that all of the are ment to suffer.
