While the mermaid is intelligent and sapient, there is a level of mutual cultural misunderstanding between the two of them, and in the sex scene are potential notes of dubious consent, due to a drunken-like effect caused by the mermaid’s own secretions; there is also a moment where the human tries to rescind his consent and pull free, and the mermaid pulls him closer, but there are no hard feelings in the aftermath.
