In the picturesque landscape of rural fourteenth-century England, Hugo lives a tranquil existence as he learns the art of apothecary under the tutelage of his revered father, in the quaint village of Knottbury. However, Hugo’s life is shattered when his father becomes ensnared in King Richard II’s ruthless campaign to eradicate rebels. Betrayed by the very authorities meant to uphold justice, Hugo’s world spirals into chaos as his father is imprisoned and his mother is killed. This thrusts Hugo into a brutal realm of violence and adversity, reshaping him from a compassionate soul into a vengeful young man.
Guiding him on his tumultuous journey are a mysterious black cat and a stray dog, bound to Hugo by unwavering loyalty, forged through his kindness.
