The custodians of Mount Rushmore, one of America’s most famous monuments, are trying to come to terms with its controversial past. For generations, Native Americans have regarded its presence in the Black Hills of South Dakota as a pointed insult. But thanks to the work of the first Native American superintendent, Mount Rushmore’s grim history has begun to be addressed.
