The Nicene Creed

The Nicene Creed gathers a capacious patristic witness to Christian confession, tracing the theological pressures, exegetical habits, and devotional languages through which Nicene faith was articulated. Its materials range from apostolic-era exhortation and apology to conciliar theology, biblical commentary, polemic, homily, ecclesiastical history, and liturgical reflection. Particularly compelling are the recurring treatments of the Son's relation to the Father, the Holy Spirit's divinity, the incarnation, and the Church's baptismal faith, which reveal the creed as both a doctrinal formula and a living rule of worship. The collection brings together Greek, Latin, and Syriac voices spanning the early Church through the late antique and early medieval worlds. Bishops, martyrs, apologists, historians, monks, and imperial figures illuminate the cultural and political contexts of Trinitarian controversy, especially the debates surrounding Nicaea and its reception. Read collectively, these writers situate creedal language within the development of catholic orthodoxy while preserving striking differences of genre, rhetoric, and regional outlook. Recommended for students of patristics, theology, and church history, this volume offers an unusually rich encounter with the many traditions that informed Nicene Christianity. Readers will find both an educational guide to doctrinal formation and a sustained dialogue among texts that continue to shape Christian thought.
