"Impossible to put down, you won’t know who or what to believe and the creepy location will have you looking over your shoulder more than once.”
—Hannah Mary McKinnon, internationally bestselling author of Never Coming Home
Intertwining the narrative with the transcript of an anonymous interview, this stunning suspense debut from Katie Garner will take you on a twisting path where nothing—and no one—is what it seems.
Finding the truth seems impossible when her own dark past has her seeing lies everywhere she looks…
From the outside, criminal psychiatrist Dr. Madeline Pine’s life appears picture-perfect—she has a beautiful family, a successful mental health practice and a growing reputation as an expert in female violence. But when she's called to help investigate a mysterious death at a boarding school for troubled girls, Madeline hesitates. She’s been through tragic cases before, and the one she was entangled in last year nearly destroyed her…
Yet she can’t turn away when she hears about Charley Ridley. After the girl was found shoeless and in pajamas at the bottom of an icy ravine on campus, the police ruled it a tragic accident. But the private investigator hired by her mother has his doubts. If it were Madeline’s daughter who died, she’d want to know why.
Arriving at the secluded campus in upstate New York, Madeline’s met by an unhelpful skeleton staff and the four other students still on campus during winter break. Each seems to hold a piece of the puzzle. And everyone has secrets—Madeline included. But who would kill to protect them?
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Secrets and lies abound in debut author Katie Garner’s twisty thriller. Criminal psychologist Madeline Pine is reeling from a mistake that destroyed her marriage when she receives a call from private investigator Matthew Reyes. He needs her help looking into the tragic death of a student from an exclusive boarding school for troubled girls, whose body was found at the bottom of a ravine. Garner crafts a well-orchestrated, claustrophobic mystery with vivid characters and an eerily gothic setting. We were especially intrigued by her unreliable protagonist, whose fractured mind forces us to question everything that’s going on. Thriller fans will want to jump in on the ground floor of this rising new talent.

Couldn’t put it down!!
I read this book in 2 sittings because I couldn’t put it down. I just HAD to know, what happened to Charley? Was she murdered? And if so, who was the killer? Throughout the story, I kept changing my mind on who I thought was guilty.
I also loved the psychological aspects and how we are in the main character’s head, seeing from her POV…How her past is revealed to the reader, little by little. Let me tell you, there are some major TWISTS in this story. Katie Garner is almost like a modern day Hitchcok, I say this because I’ve read a lot of mystery novels but the ending still took me by surprise. Definitely avoid spoilers!
I’ve read it all and this twist was amazing
I read at least 25+ thriller books a year and everything starts to sound similar. However this book, which has all the makings of a typical thriller (creepy school, heroine clearly messed up from past trauma, taking too many pills) but it’s no typical twist or ending. Touché Katie Garner - it’s a must buy for anyone getting jaded with all the same plots.
Painful To Get Through
I’m not even sure where to start. The writing does not match the education of a criminal psychiatrist, especially one who specializes in female killers. There is a twist at the end, like most who-done-it books, but that does make it any easier getting through the rest of the story. The number of unnecessary adjectives and similes. All of the Um’s and Uh’s. How many places is the main character bleeding from by the end of the book? And why.is.everyone.crying.all.of.the.time?? If I remember correctly, only 1 character manages not to cry the entire time. It’s a no from me.
