Publisher Description

A sophisticated and suspenseful novel about the poignant lives of two women living in different eras.

On the day John F. Kennedy is inaugurated, Claire, an uncompromising young wife and mother obsessed with the glamour of Jackie O, struggles over the decision of whether to stay in a loveless marriage or follow the man she loves and whose baby she may be carrying. Decades earlier, in 1919, Vivien Lowe, an obituary writer, is searching for her lover who disappeared in the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. By telling the stories of the dead, Vivien not only helps others cope with their grief but also begins to understand the devastation of her own terrible loss. The surprising connection between Claire and Vivien will change the life of one of them in unexpected and extraordinary ways. Part literary mystery and part love story, The Obituary Writer examines expectations of marriage and love, the roles of wives and mothers, and the emotions of grief, regret, and hope.

Great!!

I couldn't put it down! The way the author intertwined these two womens lives was spectacular!

The Obituary Writer

Maybe I read too many classics to be an impartial judge, but this novel is amazingly cliche. Nice try though!!

The obituary writer

If careful description were the only gauge of a good novel, this one might qualify. Way too much description of the same facts overly explained, a predictable plot, a worn out character over filled with distraught and yearning... So much melodrama, this book can't even qualify as mediocre, at best. Not one character was believable... A woman, in her third trimester of a pregnancy for which she is uncertain her husband is the father, decides it would be fun to go sledding? Really??? But in the brief last chapter she over came her infidelity, her uncaring husband, her frivolous girls friends and her silly mother-in-law, to "step bravely into to her future" and is miraculously cured of her of all her foolish mistakes because her mother-in-law, who will soon die, tells her the value of life because once she was... Big surprise... The Obituary Writer... Gag me with a spoon!
