Publisher Description
It’s the classic story—girl returns to her hometown only to end up moving in with her high school crush, who she hates.
Returning to Willowbrook was my only option after Chicago chewed me up and spit me out. Technically, it wasn’t Chicago’s fault. It was his fault—the man I thought I knew who turned out to be a liar.
My older sister, always the one to swoop in and fix things, secured me a job as a yoga instructor on her fiancé’s family ranch. As my self-assigned protector, she’s keeping one eye on me and one eye on Emmett Noughton, her fiancé’s brother.
He’s the charming, fun-loving, take-life-as-it-comes kind of guy, and once upon a time, his name was scribbled in my notebooks. Back then, I was invisible to him. Now, he’s looking at me like I’m the only thing in the room. But he lost his chance with me a long time ago.
It’s easy to keep him at arm’s length and nurse the grudge I’ve held onto for years. Until the house I’m staying in sells, and I have nowhere to go except his house. Now, resisting him isn’t just difficult—it’s impossible.

A wonderful sexy forced-proximity
Briar comes back home to recover from a breakup and wasn’t expecting her feelings for Emmett. Her return is wrapped in mystery and I like how Piper Rayne keeps us guessing. We know something happened to leave everything behind in Chicago. And Briars appealing mix of strength from her spunky attitude and fragility from her current emotional state, adds to that mystery.
Emmett is the kind of male lead I love. The misunderstood one. The underestimated younger brother. Whose older brothers keep putting him into the younger brother roll. The happy go lucky fun guy who people think doesn’t have depth. But he really does.
Yet he also pushes that narrative of himself. We get to experience the way in which these two characters open up and show each other who they really are. The parts their friends and family don’t ever see. And that leads them to their own personal growth.
I was really invested into the unraveling of the man he really is as the story progresses. Only Briar sees his true self. He lets her in and experiencing that is a beautiful thing. I enjoyed their banter. And Emmett’s no filter mouth is refreshing and hilarious. Especially the scene at the OGBYN office I haven’t laughed this much reading a book in a while.
A wonderful sexy read and I can’t wait for the next book.
4.5 out of 5 stars!
I totally didn't see that coming! Just like Emmett Noughton didn't see Briar Adams coming. Emmett uses humor to deflect his true feelings and nervousness. He has ideas about how to make the ranch more profitable but his ideas are often struck down as not serious because it's Emmett. All this makes his character tug at your heartstrings. But then Briar waltzes into his life. She's Gillian's half sister (The One I Left Behind) and she's used to her sister taking over and making things easier for her. She's moved back and has a job as a yoga instructor secured by Gillian. Emmett and Briar get each other, probably the only ones who truly know what it's like to be in the other's shoes. There are sparks and chemistry, no doubt. They show their true selves, vulnerabilities, deepest secrets. Emmett becomes the protector and cheerleader; Briar the same. Add in the talented vocal abilities of Ava Erickson and Jason Clarke as narrators and you one stellar story. Ava and Jason are long favorites of mine and hearing them voice Briar and Emmett was just icing on this cake!
