The Optics of Rays, Wavefronts, and Caustics

Authors of the classical period always began their tales by invoking one or more of the muses. Perhaps that is why scientific works frequently contain brief historical synopses that often are far too brief to be more than just barely accurate. Their purpose seems to be only to conjure up the ghosts of dead and famous men and beseech them for the right kind of inspiration.
