Elegant Story, Whispered Ending
Elegant and absorbing. Maugham’s spare prose and Kitty’s hard-won growth gripped me, and the cholera-struck setting felt vivid. I only wished for a bolder ending—the final pages whisper when the story seemed to need thunder—but it’s still a beautiful, thoughtful read.
