An ecstatic love affair could prove far, far too good to be true in this knotty thriller from Eva Jurczyk. When Genie, a Canadian, and Jacob, an American, cross paths while traveling abroad, they fall hard for each other almost immediately. They agree to meet again in Paris, where before long they’re sharing a beautiful little apartment and dreaming about the future together. Then Jacob suddenly disappears without a trace. Genie’s positive something happened to him, but the police seem to suspect something even worse: Jacob was never there. What hooked us first was this gripping tale’s format. Presented as case files, each chapter takes the form of a statement made during a police interview. The chapters rotate through a cast of fascinating characters as the cops collect statements from friends, neighbors, and other witnesses, each with their own possible reasons to lie. We didn’t want to put The Paris Files down as we tried to guess if Genie was guilty, delusional, or being cruelly gaslit.
