This is a study of each of the four Pearl Jam drummers over the course of three decades. Short transcriptions from Pearl Jam studio albums illustrate their highlights and characteristics including the "Pearl Jam groove," double-time ideas, and moments of interaction between the drums and other band members. The author interviewed Dave Krusen, drummer on the album Ten, in preparation for this project, and transcribed the drumming of Krusen, Matt Cameron, Dave Abbruzzese, and Jack Irons.
Dr. Jeremy Brown is primarily a jazz drummer who was initially turned on to music by alternative rock bands in the 1990's, particularly those bands labeled "grunge." Brown has been immersed in Pearl Jam's music throughout the band's lifespan.
