The Pearl Ledger

Eleni Argyros cleans the title on other people's pasts for a living. A maritime lawyer in Sydney, she reads old ship registries the way other people read weather, looking for the seam where the paperwork gets too tidy to be true.

The brief seems routine: clear a 1907 Greek pearling registry so a coastal consortium can build along the Dampier Peninsula. But two of the four vessel names are the same names that broke her late father's career in a case he was never allowed to explain. And the order of those names is not an order at all. It is a set of coordinates, pointing to a strongbox at Cygnet Bay that the network her family once served expected her line to forget.

What the ledger records is not only Greek divers. It is a century of debts and deaths across every community that worked those beds, and a discipline that decided, season by season, whose grief got paid.

Eleni can use it, or she can walk away. She cannot do both cleanly.

The question is no longer what the ledger proves. It is what she owes it.
