Wow, Shalini Boland is my new favorite author. This is the second book I read by her and it was just as good as the first. This is a stand alone which are my favorite.
This book is about a mother trying to find out the truth before her whole family gets taken from her. Who is telling her the truth and who wants to unravel her like a ball of string.
Nothing is what it seems in this book and that is what makes it such a fast and great read. You think you got it all figured out but then another bombshell gets dropped on you. Even the ending I would have never guessed. It makes you think that you truly don’t know someone and what bad intentions they have boiled inside of them. Boy do I love this author and book.
Between the plot, characters and all the twists in this book it made it an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The Perfect Family
If you like Mary Higgins Clark books, you’ll enjoy this one. It is not my type of book.
Shalini writes a compelling story of unfortunate circumstances creating doubt in the mind of the reader. Filled with unexpected twists and turns, Shalini is evasive with the information she reveals maintaining a somewhat thrilling aspect. The thrill was more about creating drama, tension, and suspicion.
However, the pace was extremely slow and very detailed. Some of the subject matter had me questioning the relevance, yet I suppose it was designed to distract the reader from targeting the source of conflict. As a reader I knew in the back of my mind not to trust every action.
The opening scene confused me initially as I was prepared for a different type of thriller one with suspense and action. Instead this story took an unexpected turn instead focusing on the life of a mother and a wife struggling with her career, husband, kids, and household duties.
I had hoped to gain a better insight from the perpetrator with the limited number of chapters with that characters perspective. I can’t say that those chapters clarified anything for me, yet I did divert my attention to Gemma and how she reacted to all the unfortunate circumstances.
The pace isn’t quite what I was expecting for a psychological thriller. It’s slow and steady with minimal activity. I wish the story had an edge of danger or some element of surprise.
Usually when I read a psychological thriller I begin collecting clues trying to piece together who the perpetrator is, in this story, unfortunately I’m not interested in determining who that character is. Although Shalini provided enough suspecting characters I still kept my focus on one character. I was interested in Gemma’s character in regards to her reactions and behavior with the unexpected circumstances that continued to cause havoc on her life.
I wasn’t surprised nor shocked by the ending. It was easy to accept and quite predictable. I actually was disappointed in the character and the reasons for the actions. This character was despicable.
