This has all the ingredients of a good British Victorian ghost story, complete with curses, a ghostly double of another character, and a woman who may or not be a witch. This little story has Gothic overtones with a castle, curses, apparitions, etc.

Good Example of it's Type
Very nice Victorian gothic ghost story. Very different from Mrs. Gaskell's more well known Cranford. As a Unitarian, Gaskell was pretty tolerant of "papists" which is noticeable in this story.
