The Profiteers

The British and Imperial Co has cornered the wheat market in England. The price of bread has quadrupled, causing misery amongst the working classes. Among the directors of the company is the dissipated Lord Darlington, and the profiteer Phipps. All London is speculating. Into this mix arrives Mr Wingate, British American millionaire and war hero. He meets Lord Darlington's wife, Josephine, who is estranged from her husband. She ran a hospital in France during the war where Wingate recuperated from his wounds, and fell in love. Wingate is also the sworn enemy of Phipps because of a prior encounter.
