Great images
I've followed Al's work since the early 70's....and most of these images are new to me. A great use of the iBook format.
Informational & Entertaining
Al Satterwhite has put together an iBook that is both informational and entertaining. He has combined his own, never seen before, photos with his own commentary that makes the photos come alive. His narrative could only have resulted because he was there and knew the races, drivers, mechanics and cars involved. HIs inclusion of commentary from Janet Guthrie adds an interesting bit of "What's it like out there" to Al's work. For those of us who are wary of the trend to publish niche books electronically instead of in hard copy, Al has shown our fears may have been misplaced. He makes the most use of the new publishing methodology. All in all, certainly worth the price of admission and I look forward to other titles.
the Racers: Daytona 24-Hour & Sebring 12-Hour endurance races
I photographed these races from 1963~1973, a most interesting era of international auto racing that saw many changes in aerodynamics & down-force, engine & suspension development, not to mention safety for the drivers who were getting killed at an incredible rate in the early 60s (pit lane at Sebring went from a few hay bales to an actual solid low protective wall); it was the era of the American brute force Shelby Cobra's vs the high stepping European Ferrari's and then the phenomenal 917 Porsches that dominated racing. All captured in B&W, close-up and personal, done as a scrapbook; close-ups of drivers and crew members plus action on the circuits; many 2-page spreads; Mark Donohue, Dan Gurney, Hurley Haywood, Phil Hill, Jacky Ickx, Stirling Moss, Roger Penske, Peter Revson, Carroll Shelby and many others featured; if you are a fan of endurance racing from that era you won't be disappointed; Plus I have included audio anecdotes on every page; it's a great 'gotta have', especially if you can't afford the $500 limited edition book that is also available (alsatterwhite.com)
