Publisher Description

"When the Wall of Sound Met the New York Underground: The Ramones, Phil Spector and End of the Century" explores the collaboration album between two rock legends. New York punk trendsetters The Ramones had spent years cranking out influential albums that failed to set the charts on fire, so it was decided they should team with legendary '60s producer Phil Spector to make that elusive hit album that would take them to the top. But like most thing in the world of The Ramones, things didn't quite work out the way they planned. Guns, drugs, affairs, death, mannequins and madness ensued as the band attempted to fuse their style with the work of an esteemed madman. All the while the band was shooting the Roger Corman b-movie Rock 'n' Roll High School and burning the candle at both ends. The result is the misunderstood classic, End of the Century. Penned by On the Road with the Ramones author and Streetwalkin' Cheetahs frontman Frank Meyer, "When the Wall of Sound Met the New York Underground" unearths the most fascinating story in the Ramones saga.

This Book Turned Me On

I knew squat about the Ramones, but now I have to go get this Spector album and the Corman flick and find out what I might be missing.

You Call This a Book? More like a blown-out magazine article

Very short, very little important background information…No mention at all of the real founders of the NYC punk scene, Patti Smith and Television (who built the stage at CBGBs). Extremely repetitive, like a writer who has to meet a certain quota of words to get paid. How many times do I have to read "Was it a sell out or the Ramones finest record?" Nearly every tidbit has already been published elsewhere numerous times… No mention of The Beatles Let It Be and McCartney controversy about overproduction - a claim also relevant to End Of The Century…. No "where they are today" info.. Like Tommy? Marky? (or Phil Spector)… Yes, Spector has a thing about guns…kept ex-wife Ronnie Spector imprisoned (not unlike the Ramones' story).. no mention that he killed a woman in his foyer in 2003 and is doing life for murder. Extremely underwhelming. Possibly not worth $1.99.
