The Renewal Dates

The notice arrives by courier, in a plain envelope with no postage and a single date inside: October 24, 2029. On that day, everyone on Earth will leave. Nobody knows where they are going, and nobody seems to care. They just sign the form.

Meo Utherns doesn't sign. He's twenty-four, a struggling freelance designer with half a degree, a drawer full of unfinished projects, and a lifelong habit of starting everything the night before it's due. His sister begs him to come. His mother sets the good china for one last dinner. But staring at the expiration date on his debit card, Meo sees what nobody else does. The world won't end when the people leave. It will end in the months after, one lapsed certificate, unrenewed license, and seized bearing at a time, as the machines humanity left behind slowly fail.

So for the first time in his life, Meo starts early. With a homebuilt AI named Linus, a crew of miners who'd rather dig than wait, and a retired power-grid architect who knows where the passwords live, he carves a refuge into the granite of the Cascades. He fills it with seed vaults, a chip fab, surgical robots, and the mother tools, the machines that make every other machine.
