The Return Load

Eight cutting tables have reached a workshop in Romania. Now someone wants them back. Femke Veldkamp, a Dutch truck driver with a doctorate in engineering, has been asked to compare the cost of the return journeys.

In Budapest, Adrian Amsler joins her for what should be a limited piece of work. Then the man trying to arrange the return is killed, leaving behind promises that different people remember accepting.

Their questions take them from Budapest and Csömör through Kecskemét to Timișoara, where the tables have already become part of other people’s working lives. Finding out who killed a man will not settle what his promises have cost. Nor will bringing the load back make it the same load that left.
