Publisher Description
The Round Prairie Wars is a childhood story set on the Great Plains in 1953 during the Red Scare. Jeb Wilder, a nine-year-old girl, faces battles on every front, living in a trailer house with a schizophrenic mother in a small town determined to ostracize anyone perceived as different. While her mother drags Jeb into a world of shifting realities and vivid hallucinations, she also protects her with poetry and word games. Meanwhile, Round Prairie moves toward a horrendous incident which disguises small-town bigotry as the purge of "Communists" to maintain the social structure and its treasured ideologies. But with the help of her brother and a few unlikely friends, Jeb manages to build a life like the survivors of a nearby tornado, from pieces of rubble, broken and random, but uniquely hers.
Customer Reviews
The best coming of age novel ever!
Loved the characters, their relationships, and the plot. Very moving and compelling. Contains a lot of factual history, but the best part is that it’s told from a child’s perspective. I’ve never finished reading a book this long before— never had the patience. This one is well worth reading, every single page. Many of the environmental descriptions are poetic, and the main character’s internal monologues are emotionally moving. The author is gifted in writing dialogue, and in pacing the story’s development. Loved the whole thing!
