"Petrie has a preternatural talent for ratcheting up suspense."--New York Times Book Review
When Peter Ash rescues a stranded woman, he finds she’s in far deeper trouble than he could ever imagine in the powerful new thriller in this bestselling and award-winning series.
War veteran Peter Ash is driving through northern Nebraska when he encounters a young pregnant woman alone on a gravel road, her car dead. Peter offers her a lift, but what begins as an act of kindness soon turns into a deadly cat-and-mouse chase across the lonely highways with the woman’s vicious ex-cop husband hot on their trail. The pregnant woman has seen something she was never meant to see . . . but protecting her might prove to be more than Peter can handle.
In order to save the woman and himself, Peter must use everything he has learned during his time as a Marine, including his knowledge of human nature, in order to escape a ruthless killer with instincts and skills that match—and perhaps exceed—Peter’s own.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Former U.S. Marine Peter Ash can’t stay out of other people’s problems, no matter how often it puts him in very dangerous situations. Case in point: When Ash comes to the aid of a stranded, pregnant 19-year-old named Helene on a rural country road, he steps into the crosshairs of a vindictive killer. We were hooked from the first page of Nick Petrie’s hypnotic thriller, which travels back in time to follow Ash and Helene on their separate journeys leading to their fateful meeting. As he’s done throughout his breakout Peter Ash series, Petrie expertly takes you inside his hero’s mental and emotional struggles, where the urge to do the right thing is often at odds with Ash’s stunningly well-depicted PTSD. Full of terrifying twists, this taut thriller left us pondering how far we’d go to be free.
At the start of Thriller Award winner Petrie's gripping seventh novel featuring Marine vet Peter Ash (after 2021's The Breaker), 19-year-old Helene Johansen seizes the chance to escape her dreary life in Coldwater, Mont., by hitching a ride with Roy Wiley, a charming stranger who stops to fill up his truck at the gas station where she works. Months later, Ash is driving through rural Nebraska when he comes across a vacant car and a pregnant Helene by the side of the road. Since her impulsive decision, Helene has discovered Roy is the leader of a team of professional thieves and a cold-blooded killer, but only after falling for and marrying him. She's willing to do whatever she has to, to protect herself and her unborn child. She gladly accepts Ash's help, but she later abandons him to his fate when Roy and his crew corner them in the remote countryside and she pretends to have gone with Ash unwillingly. Ash escapes, and a nail-biting chase across the northern Great Plains ensues. Shifting points of view serve to heighten the suspense. This adrenaline-fueled ride will keep readers turning the pages.
Darker than normal
Good book in the series. Got my attention from the start. Would have liked more of Peter, Lewis, and June but the story was fast paced. Dark and sad because things like this actually happen. Looking forward to the next in the series.
A good read, well paced, great ending…
Dont waste your time!!! Bad!
