A Delightful Tour Through the Science Fiction Genre
This review covers the entire series. At the end of each individual review are notes about the longer-form work(s) included among the short stories in each megapack.
This collection, and all the similarly named collections, is a sampling of science fiction and it’s many suibgenres throughout the last 80 years. It is not a ‘best of’ collection, but the stories range from good to excellent, and for the most part are well curated.
With such a widely diverse selection of styles and suit-genres, you are likely to find some you like much better than others. Accept that and skip the ones you feel do not appeal. For 99 cents, even one or two stories cover the cost and there are many more than that.
In this, the first megapack, the long form story is “Captives of the Flame”, by the SF master Samuel R. Delany. It is an excellent introduction to his early work, but as such is somewhat flawed, and the author revised it for a later republication. It is the first novel in the “Fall of the Towers” trilogy, so you can look for the others if this one catches your fancy. It was later published as “Out of the Dead City” with the author’s revisions.
