The Scythians

Across the Eurasian grasslands, mobile communities mastered mounted warfare, connected distant markets and left gold, graves and contested stories that still challenge settled ideas of civilisation. Explore the Scythian world through rulers, cities, warfare, belief, trade and ordinary life. This illustrated history follows the evidence across the Pontic-Caspian steppe, the northern Black Sea, the Caucasus, the Altai, Central Asia and the frontier zones linking pastoral and settled societies, distinguishes contemporary records from later legend and explains why political change affected regions and communities differently. Clear chronology, maps, genuine historical images, source studies, a glossary and balanced discussion make a complex ancient world accessible without sacrificing uncertainty or historical depth. Drawing on burial mounds, preserved textiles and bodies, weapons, horse gear, goldwork, settlement archaeology, Greek and Persian texts and later comparative evidence, Murat Smith reconstructs political power alongside the people, resources and institutions that sustained it. The result is an accessible but serious account that tests famous stories against archaeology and documentary evidence, explains scholarly disagreements and follows both achievement and human cost.
