Publisher Description
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Winter King comes a breathtaking new tale of love and adventure set in the mystical land of Mystral
He wasn’t supposed to choose her…
Seafaring prince Dilys Merimydion has been invited to court the three magical princesses of Summerlea. To eradicate the pirates threatening Calberna and to secure the power of the Sea Throne, Dilys vows to return home with a fierce warrior-queen as his bride. But politics has nothing to do with unexpected temptation.
She didn't dare wed him...
A weathermage like her sisters, Gabriella Coruscate’s gentleness exemplifies the qualities of her season name, Summer. Yet her quiet poise conceals dangerous powers she cannot begin to wield. Better to live without excitement, she reasons, than risk her heart and lose control—until an irresistible Sealord jolts her awake with a thunderclap of raw desire.
Until evil threatens everything they hold dear…
When pirates kidnap Summer and her sisters, Dilys begins a desperate quest to save the woman he loves. Only by combining his command of the seas with the unleashed fury of Summer’s formidable gifts can they defeat their brutal enemies and claim the most priceless victory of all: true love.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
The second novel in Wilson's Weathermages of Mystral romantic fantasy series (after The Winter King) follows in the grand tradition of swooning heroines and overly beautiful men. Wilson takes readers to the now-united fantasy lands of Summerlea and Wintercraig. Storm, the youngest of the Seasons of Summerlea (as the former king's daughters are known), has married Wintercraig's king and brought her three sisters to its castle. The matriarchal Calbernans are seafaring mercenaries who practice sea-based magic, once enemies of Wintercraig but now allies; as part of the peace process, they send a delegation of eligible, unwed male Calbernans to find brides among the ladies of the land. Calbernan prince Dilys Merimydion has been given a short list of appropriate mates that includes the three unmarried princesses. Gabriella, called Summer, is known to be the sweetest and quietest of the four, but this fa ade hides a secret that she fears will destroy everyone she touches. She's certainly not what the powerful, gregarious Dilys thinks he's looking for. They fight their mutual attraction, but fate draws them inexorably together. The danger doesn't lie in their love, however, but from hidden enemies determined to see empires fall. With prose that shades toward purple at times and an almost incessant repetition of plot points, the epic romance is entertaining but falls short of excellence.

Good but not quite great
This was another strong showing from CL Wilson with fantastic world building and a swoon-worthy male lead. However, it never quite achieves the excellence of the Tairen series nor the Winter King. Summer is weak and annoyingly wishy-washy and hard to root for (as much as I wanted to.) With that being said, it was great to learn more about the Calberneans and their matriarchal society. And I will be eagerly looking forward to the remaining two books for last of the sister Seasons.
Another great one!
I loved this one, can't wait for the next one in this series!
Not as good as others
The winter king and Tairen soul books were better. It felt so repetitive and I had a hard time liking Summer at all. She was just annoying and weak.
